Sam Neill dead at 78: tributes pour in for Jurassic Park star

Sam Neill, the actor who brought paleontologist Dr Alan Grant to life in one of the most beloved blockbusters in cinema history, has died aged 78. His family confirmed the news on Monday, describing his passing as ‘sudden and unexpected,’ sending shockwaves through Hollywood and far beyond.

Neill had been open about his battle with a rare blood cancer, peripheral T-cell lymphoma, following his diagnosis in 2022. But fans and co-stars had taken comfort in his characteristically upbeat public presence — his active social media posts, his beloved winery in Central Otago, New Zealand, and his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, published just last year.

A world in mourning

Within hours of the announcement, tributes were pouring in from every corner of the globe. Jurassic Park co-star Laura Dern called Neill ‘a hero, a legend and the most irreplaceable sweetheart.’ Jeff Goldblum posted a black-and-white photograph of the two of them on set, writing simply: ‘There are no words. Only gratitude.’

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Neill as ‘one of our greatest cultural ambassadors,’ adding that the country had lost ‘a man who made us all proud.’ Steven Spielberg, who directed Neill in the original 1993 film and its 2001 sequel Jurassic Park III, released a brief statement calling him ‘a consummate professional and a genuinely kind human being.’

A career spanning five decades

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, Northern Ireland, Neill grew up in New Zealand after his family emigrated when he was seven. He studied at the University of Canterbury before catching the acting bug in the early 1970s.

His breakout role came in 1981’s Omen III: The Final Conflict, and a string of acclaimed performances followed — The Piano, Peaky Blinders, the TV series Reilly, Ace of Spies. But it was Jurassic Park that cemented his place in pop culture history. The film grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office on its original release, and Neill reprised the role of Grant in 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, which earned a further $1 billion globally.

He appeared in more than 100 film and television productions over a career that stretched more than 50 years.

The man behind the movies

Those who knew Neill personally consistently described a man whose warmth matched his talent. He was a devoted father of three, a passionate wine producer, and a prolific presence on Instagram — where he regularly posted videos of his animals at Two Paddocks, his Otago vineyard.

Still, it was his openness about illness that struck many as his bravest performance. He wrote candidly about his cancer treatment in his memoir, refusing to let it define him.

A memorial service is expected to be held in New Zealand later this month. The date has not yet been confirmed.
