Hungary’s beloved annual corn maze has returned for another season, this time inviting visitors to step inside a sprawling fairy tale world carved across 4.5 hectares of farmland. The labyrinthine attraction, which draws thousands of visitors each year, opened its gates this week with winding paths and hidden surprises tucked between towering green stalks.

A tradition that started with a simple idea

Back in 2008, a small group of locals in the Hungarian countryside decided to do something different with their cornfields. Armed with hoes, measuring tapes, and a lot of ambition, they began carving out a maze that would eventually become one of the region’s most anticipated summer events. That first effort was modest by today’s standards. But it planted a seed.

Year after year, the team returned. The designs grew more elaborate, the crowds grew larger, and what started as a community experiment became a genuine seasonal landmark. This year’s fairy tale theme is arguably their most imaginative yet, featuring characters and scenes that families with young children will instantly recognize.

What visitors can expect inside

The maze covers 4.5 hectares — roughly the size of six football pitches — and contains several kilometres of interconnected paths. Visitors can expect to spend anywhere from 45 minutes to well over two hours navigating their way through, depending on how lost they get. And getting lost, the organizers will tell you, is entirely the point.

Scattered throughout the maze are numbered checkpoints, illustrated story panels, and interactive elements designed to keep younger visitors engaged rather than frustrated. It’s equal parts puzzle and adventure.

More than just a maze

Surrounding the main maze, visitors will find a small outdoor play area, refreshment stands selling local food and drinks, and guided tour options for groups who’d rather not wander alone. Entrance fees remain affordable by design — the organizers have always been clear that accessibility matters to them.

Looking ahead to the season

The maze is expected to remain open through late September, when the corn typically begins to dry out and the autumn harvest approaches. Organizers are already hinting that next year’s theme is in early discussion, though they’re keeping details close to their chest for now.

For a rural community that decided 17 years ago to turn farmland into entertainment, the continued success of the project says something about what happens when local enthusiasm meets genuine creativity. Hungary’s corn maze isn’t going anywhere. And judging by the queues on opening weekend, neither are its fans.
