Andrew and Tristan Tate have been arrested in the United States, as the Crown Prosecution Service announced it has formally requested their extradition to face a total of 59 charges now filed against them in the UK.

Their lawyer was swift to push back. “Our clients are innocent of all charges and we will fight this at every stage,” the attorney said in a brief statement issued hours after the arrests were confirmed.

The jump to 59 charges is notable. When the Tate brothers were first arrested in Romania, the case involved serious but comparatively narrower allegations. Since then, UK prosecutors have been building their own parallel case, and the number has climbed steadily. The CPS hasn’t disclosed a full breakdown of how the 59 charges are distributed between the two men, but sources familiar with the case say the offences span incidents allegedly dating back several years.
Still, getting them into a British courtroom won’t be straightforward. Extradition cases are notoriously slow, and the brothers’ legal team has already signalled it intends to contest the process at every available opportunity. Romania’s own ongoing proceedings add another layer of complexity, since Romanian authorities had previously opposed attempts to transfer jurisdiction.

Andrew Tate, 37, built a vast online following promoting a hyper-masculine lifestyle and became one of the most searched people on the internet in 2022. His brother Tristan, 36, was a constant presence alongside him. But fame hasn’t translated into legal protection. The two men have now faced detention or restrictions across three countries — Romania, the UK through its charging process, and now the United States.
Romanian prosecutors charged the brothers with rape, human trafficking, and forming a criminal gang. Those charges remain active.
What happens next
The extradition request will now go through the US court system, where a judge will need to rule on whether the brothers can be transferred to British custody. That process could take months, possibly longer if appeals are filed. The CPS said it was confident in its legal position and was working closely with American counterparts to move the case forward as efficiently as possible.
