EU climate target on track but transport emissions remain stubborn
The European Environment Agency’s annual climate progress report, published Tuesday, confirms that the European Union remains on track to deliver its 55 percent greenhouse gas reduction target by 2030, with cumulative emissions now 33 percent below 1990 levels.
However, the report flags two persistent weak spots: transport emissions, which have stagnated rather than declined, and the buildings sector, where the renovation rate remains a fraction of what is required.
“Headline progress masks significant sectoral and Member State divergences,” the report notes. Six Member States are projected to miss their effort-sharing targets without additional measures.
The findings will inform the next iteration of the National Energy and Climate Plans, due for finalisation later this year.
