Poland detains man suspected of plotting PM Tusk assassination

Polish authorities have detained a man suspected of planning to assassinate Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. The suspect, a Polish national, was arrested in the Lower Silesia region after police received credible information about possible attacks. Interior ministry spokeswoman Karolina Galecka said an email with information about a potential attack was forwarded to police by the State Protection Service, which is responsible for ministers’ security.

Officials are treating the threat as “deadly serious,” and a special meeting of security services was convened on Sunday. Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesman for the Special Services Co-ordinator, told local media: “In this case we are talking about a strong likelihood that these threats could actually be carried out.” Tusk thanked police for their “swift and decisive action” in arresting the suspect.
