Donald Trump has once again shifted his account of the alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, this time claiming the supposed “slashes” in the liner stretched for 300 yards — a measurement that doesn’t square with any of his previous descriptions and has produced no supporting evidence.
The pool was drained again this week, and Trump used the occasion to double down on his vandalism narrative online. But his latest post described damage measuring 300 yards, after he had previously cited figures of 250 feet, 300 feet, and 350 feet across separate statements. That’s a significant spread — and the jump from feet to yards only adds more confusion to an already murky claim.
A shifting story
The inconsistency is hard to ignore. Trump’s accounts have now varied by hundreds of feet depending on the day, with no explanation offered for the discrepancy. And it’s not a minor rounding error. The difference between 250 feet and 300 yards — which equals 900 feet — is enormous. That’s nearly the length of three football fields.
So far, no photographs or video footage from the drained pool appear to show any obvious signs of the massive gash Trump described. Reporters and observers who reviewed images of the empty basin said the liner looked largely intact, with no visible slashes or catastrophic damage consistent with what the former president portrayed.
No evidence presented
The White House has not released any independent engineering assessments, contractor reports, or photographic documentation to back up the vandalism claims. A National Park Service spokesperson said the agency would not comment on the specific cause of the draining or on any alleged damage to the pool’s infrastructure.
Still, Trump has framed the entire situation as deliberate sabotage, pointing fingers without identifying any suspects or providing a timeline of when the damage supposedly occurred.
That’s a pattern critics say they’ve seen before.
Why the pool was drained
The Reflecting Pool, which stretches roughly 2,030 feet between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, has faced genuine maintenance issues in the past. It was last fully renovated in 2012 at a cost of approximately $34 million, a project that included replacing the liner and installing a recirculating water system. Routine inspections and occasional draining are standard practice.
Whether this latest draining is routine maintenance or something more significant hasn’t been independently confirmed. But the gap between what Trump is claiming and what the visual record currently shows is substantial.
What comes next
Pressure is likely to grow on park officials to release a formal assessment of the pool’s condition. Without one, the public is left choosing between Trump’s shifting numbers and an empty pool that, at least from the outside, doesn’t appear to tell the dramatic story he’s describing. And with each new post changing the dimensions of the alleged damage, the credibility of the claim gets harder to defend.
